Every wave of automation has eliminated a layer of manual skill and created a new one above it. The pattern is consistent enough to plan around.

Craft Survives Automation by Moving Up a Level

When compilers arrived, a generation of programmers who wrote assembly by hand argued that the output would be inefficient and the discipline would decay. They were right about the first part for years. They were wrong about what mattered, because the skill did not disappear, it relocated: from writing instructions to structuring programs.

The pattern

Automation reliably takes the most mechanical layer of a craft and makes it cheap. The practitioners who suffer are those whose identity was in that layer. The practitioners who thrive are those who move to the layer above, where the work becomes judgement about what to build rather than the mechanics of building it.

Photography did not eliminate composition. Spreadsheets did not eliminate financial analysis; they made a class of analysis possible that nobody had time for before. In each case the volume of work went up, not down, because cheaper production revealed demand that the previous cost had suppressed.

What the new layer looks like

  • Problem selection. Deciding what deserves to be built at all is untouched by tools that build faster.
  • Evaluation. Knowing whether output is good requires taste that is developed by having done the work, which is why the middle rungs of a ladder cannot be removed safely.
  • Integration. Making many pieces work as a coherent whole is where most of the difficulty now lives.
  • Responsibility. Someone must be accountable for the result, and accountability cannot be delegated to a system.

The genuine risk

There is one part of the optimistic story that deserves scepticism. Expertise has historically been built by doing the mechanical work badly for several years until judgement developed. If the mechanical layer disappears entirely, the training path disappears with it, and we do not yet have a replacement. This is a real problem for junior practitioners and an underdiscussed one.

Automating the bottom rung of a ladder is only progress if you build a new way to climb.

What to do about it individually

Keep doing enough of the manual work to retain the judgement, even when a tool would be faster. Not out of nostalgia, but because evaluation is the durable skill and it decays without practice. The people who will be most valuable are not those who use the tools most aggressively; they are the ones who can still tell when the output is wrong.
